BFDB is honored to receive the 2023 AIA | LBSB Residential Architecture Merit Award for our extensive remodel of a 1960s-era, two-unit residence in North Manhattan Beach. This recognition celebrates our dedication to thoughtful, purpose-driven design and our ability to transform a neglected property into a refined, modern living space.
A Thoughtful and Elegant Transformation
The project began in the fall of 2019, with a vision to rehabilitate and elevate a half-lot corner property while respecting its original structure. Our team worked closely with ownership and city planning to create a design that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings while enhancing livability and functionality.
Facing the challenge of a disjointed three-level layout, our primary focus was on introducing a series of new stair flights to unify the floors and create a cohesive flow. The central stairwell, a defining design feature, was meticulously crafted to channel natural daylight from above, gently illuminating the lower levels.
Materiality & Minimalism
The interior redesign prioritized simplicity and refinement. Subtle yet sophisticated finishes define the kitchen and baths, where white oak cabinetry, petra grey porcelain, and rose gold fixtures create a warm yet modern aesthetic. Exterior materials, including white plaster and anodized aluminum, were selected for their clean, understated presence, ensuring durability and timeless appeal.
One of the most distinctive elements of the project is the garage door—a flush panel clad in cedar, with the building address recessed into it. This serves as the singular ornamental indulgence within the otherwise minimalistic facade, demonstrating our belief in precision and restraint in architectural detailing.
Engaging the Urban Context
Situated in an aggressive alleyway setting, the remodeled residence now presents a confident yet understated entryway that actively engages with the street. The result is a light-filled, well-detailed home that seamlessly blends function and elegance, reaffirming our commitment to innovative and site-responsive design.
Winning this prestigious award is a testament to BFDB’s ability to reimagine spaces with sophistication and intention.
